A thought that has been stuck in my head for a while now…
Some people believe that you can only be family if you are bound by blood.
I disagree.
Blood makes you related, yes, but it takes a hell of a lot more to make you family.
Just think about it for a moment.
If we can only be family by blood, how about children who are adopted? They don’t have a blood connection to the parents who raise them and love them all their lives.
So, they can’t be family, right?
And what about a foster child? Not family?
And how about siblings from just one parent, half sisters and brothers? Are they half family then?
Sounds a bit shallow to me…
I have family members by blood who I never see or speak. I do consider them to be family because of the blood band we share, but that’s about it.
There are people who I love way more that aren’t blood related to me in any way.
People who are there for me when I need them. People who make me laugh when I want to cry. People to share my thoughts and dreams with. People who love me for who I am…
Isn’t that what family is about?
And your life partner? Is he or she family?
Think about this: if the only real family we have are the ones we are related to by blood, we all end up marrying a cousin or something.
Another thought: If blood makes you family, does that mean that people who get a blood transfusion are suddenly related to the one who donated the blood? I don’t think so.
So yeah, I disagree with the fact that the only family we have is bound to us by blood.
Because there is so much more to being family then sharing blood…
Lots of Love,
Patty
